Revolutions
You heard it here first: Legally Blonde 2 is going to change United States politics by inspiring a generation of young women to march on Washington and demand those old white men wake the fuck up and listen. At least that is what would happen in my perfect world. It might be pure fantasy, but it's still a damn fine fairy tale. Reese Witherspoon is one smart cookie. Yes, I loved the first one too. Why do you ask?

Thursday evening I was in the mood to kick off the holiday weekend with a little bit of happy hour, but when I got to The Top it was locked up tight. Was I too early? Fortunately the drive time was good for developing a story idea I've been kicking around in my head. I went home and watched Rushmore with the Wes Anderson/Owen Wilson/Jason Schwartzman commentary track. I was hoping for more jokes from Owen, but it was still fun. Bottle Rocket remains first in my heart forever though.

I spent Independence Day itself lazing around in the sun doing absolutely nothing. I was going to make it over to the Bayside BBQ Bash to watch the fireworks and nod my head for a while, but I got caught up in one of the epic phone conversations that my boy and I always have and completely lost my momentum. I don't mind one bit when he distracts me. Tybalt and I listened to the explosions overhead and out in the street and decided home was a better place to be by far.

Summer is a funny time in San Francisco. We persist in having street festivals as if we actually expect a sunny day to occur. I braved the fog and the wind Saturday morning to browse the Fillmore Street Jazz Festival and wisely resisted the lure of Ooga Booga Sticks and deep-fried Twinkies. I was afraid if I stood still long enough to listen to any of the bands my legs would freeze and fall off and then how would I get myself home?

The weather was much more pleasant over in Dolores Park, where I met Sara and Pete and their gorgeous picnic basket to view the San Francisco Mime Troupe's latest, Veronique of the Mounties. In it, the United States launches Operation: "Frozen Freedom" on its neighbor to the north, and it's up to Mounty Veronique du Bois to stem the tide of imperialism. Velina Brown was fantastic playing the dual roles of Veronique and Condoleeza Rice, and the musical numbers managed to be both wonderfully clever and scathing at the same time. "God's Little Warriors" was a particular favorite of mine. Would groups like the Mime Troupe simply disappear if California cuts all arts funding to help solve the budget crisis? God help my state. God help my country.
