The Cold Vein
Cannibal Ox
The Cold Vein made it onto a lot of "Best of" lists for 2001, and it's not hard to see why. This is indie hip-hop at its most primeval. Cannibal Ox's songs unite murky lyrics with raw beats, and the result on tracks like "Atom" and "Vein" is sublime. I think my favorite track is "Real Earth" where this luscious bassy sample keeps repeating under the rapping. Intelligent music that you can feel in your bones.
