Indonesian Guitars
Various Artists
I picked this up out of sheer curiosity, because I sure don't know the first thing about the music of Indonesia. Thank God for Smithsonian Folkways. This album is the last in their 20-CD overview of Indonesian music, and it features music as diverse as the islands themselves. The common element throughout is the guitar, used both in very traditional and very modern ways. On the opening track "Kemayoran" a simple tune is plucked out while a male and female voice alternate in singing a plaintive melody, while "Sungguh Terpaksa" sounds to me almost like Indonesian blues. This is a wonderfully unique collection, and it makes me want to go choose other Folkways albums at random just to see what I get.
