The Madcap Laughs
Syd Barrett
I am too young to care that Barrett was one of the original members of Pink Floyd, and instead I enjoy this album for the vintage psychedelic romp that it is. Music from this era is still pretty new to me, and the thrill of discovery is neat. The Madcap Laughs opens with "Terrapin," an appropriately-paced ramble complete with lyrics that appear to be falling right out of Barrett's brain. "Dark Globe" seems like a happy little solo tune until you start listening to the words, while "Octopus" is a fine piece of drug-addled whimsy. This album goes all over the place, but that's what makes it so fun.
